What is a week? The accepted answer would be a period of seven days; for the same common reasons. Yet weeks of different lengths have existed: the ancient Egyptians had a ten day week; the Romans used the ten day weeks of nones, ides and kalends until the first century CE; the French revolutionaries had a ten day week. The Mayan and other Mesoamerican civilizations use a thirteen and twenty day week of suprising accuratecy. Between 1929 and 1940 the Soviet Union adopted a five, then a six day week.. The Lithuanians once had a nine day week. Yet since they learned to count time, the peoples from Greece, through Babylon, central Asia to China have used the seven day week.

Der Autor wurde 1951 in Mannheim geboren. Nach Abschluss seiner Ausbildung ging er im Jahre 1970 nach Thailand. Mit wenigen Unterbrechungen hat er seit dieser Zeit in diesem Land gelebt. Aus Hobby hat der Autor viele Artikel über Thailand geschrieben. Sein Weg führte ihn in viele Provinzen des Landes und er konnte die Entwicklung von Thailand und die Einflüsse des Westens selbst miterleben. Sehr früh lernte er die Landessprache und dies brachte ihm viele Vorteile in Thailand.Heute bedauert er es, dass er nicht auch die Schrift gelernt hat. Er möchte dies aber noch nachholen.
